Beyond any doubts Dan Mândrilă (1938 - 1992) was the most significant Romanian jazz saxophonist that performed during the communist era. Along with Ştefan Berindei, Richard Oschanitzky, Marius Popp and Johnny Răducanu, he dominated the Romanian jazz scene between the 1960’s and mid 1980’s. Following the general trend of the day, he incorporated ethnic elements in his compositions but kept up to date with the (back then) contemporary jazz styles as well.
Here we have a CD released by the Electrecord in the main series of jazz records - Jazz Restitutio - which they used to issue when they were the sole official record company in Romania. The album is, in fact, a reissue of
Alter Ego along with several other tracks. In it you will also hear Ştefan Berindei (soprano sax), Marius Popp (piano), Johnny Răducanu (double bass), Eugen Gondi (drums), Bogdan Dumitu (keys), Costin Petrescu (drums), Marian Toroimac (drums), Idu Barbu (synth, strings), Dan Dumitru (bass), Ion Baciu Jr. (keys), Radu Goldiş (guitar) and Nicolae Farcaş (trombone).
This record will give you a good idea of how the second generation of romanian jazz musicians sounded like, at the height of their compositional and technical abilities. It has a bound, consistend sound with beautiful and original melodic flows that will either warm your soul or get you dancing. It is, to this day, the only Mândrilă album issued on CD.
